Immersive Cooking Program

From learning to leading, one meal at a time

Background

Rossbourne School is an independent, co-educational, non-denominational secondary school for students identified as having learning difficulties.

The Immersive Cooking Program is a collaborative initiative between It’s the Little Things Community and Rossbourne School, aimed at equipping students with life skills through practical, hands-on cooking experiences. The program is designed to foster independence, boost confidence, and cultivate empathy by connecting students with meaningful community service.

Objectives

Skill Development: Through this program, students are introduced to fundamental cooking techniques while developing an understanding of kitchen safety, food hygiene, and nutrition. The experience not only builds practical life skills but also encourages mindful and healthy food preparation habits

Community Connection: By involving students in the creation of meals for vulnerable members of the community, the program nurtures a strong sense of empathy and civic engagement. It offers young people a tangible way to contribute, deepening their awareness of social responsibility and the impact of collective action.

Inclusion & Confidence: The initiative is designed to foster an inclusive and encouraging environment where students of all abilities feel supported and capable. As they work collaboratively, students gain confidence in their skills and in themselves, reinforcing a sense of belonging and self-worth.

Education in Action: Classroom knowledge is brought to life as students apply their learning in meaningful, real-world contexts. This hands-on approach not only enhances engagement but also demonstrates how education can drive positive change within the community.

Testimonial

When I first joined It’s the Little Things Community it felt like I was connecting with people, chatting with them, and making the meals which was fun. I’ve always wanted to volunteer and help out more. For me it was the first time ever that I cooked for people out there who have suffered domestic violence and who experience financial stress .
